Established in 1940 as a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners, Auschwitz became the center for extermination of European Jews in 1942. During the years 1940-1945, the Nazis killed approximately 1,3 million people there. The victims were mainly Jews, but also included many Poles, Roma and Sinti, Russian POWs, and members of other nationalities. Nowadays, Auschwitz houses the biggest cemetery in the world, along with a memorial and State museum.
